May 30, 2020. Despite being our shortest hike, it was one filled with bravery and resiliency. After a difficult 8 hours in the Emergency Room on Memorial Day, Penelope was fitted with a cast for her newly broken arm. The doctor placed relief cuts in the cast due to the extensive swelling and follow up appointments would ensue. Yet, just 5 days after breaking her arm, Penelope was ready to hit the trails. Though the broken arm triggered a sense of grief/loss/fear that hovers so near the surface in these virus times, it also served as a reminder of resiliency. I am inspired as I watch Penelope find innovative ways to do things, surrender to the need for help, and bravely face fears. I’m also in awe as I watch her brother support and care for her as she heals. What a friend they have in each other and what a privilege to be their mama.
