A Sticky Situation.

June 14, 2020. In our family, we love to be adventurers. We try to approach life with open minds and courageous souls. We lived into this on another beautiful day at Indian Lake. On our three mile trek, we explored the wide open prairie, enjoyed birds, found beautiful insects and, on a whim, decided to hike all the way around the lake. While there appeared to be a trail around the backside of the lake, we soon ran into a sticky situation (pun intended). Mud. And lots of it. It reminded me a bit of the beloved children’s book “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt” by Michael Rosen. We couldn’t go over it…we couldn’t go around it…we had to go through it. So we did, with the help of dada and his boots!

Sometimes when we take a leap of faith to follow a path we’ve never traversed, we face new challenges. Yet, when we don’t go it alone, even the messiest of situations feels a bit more manageable. Our muddy mess has me thinking about what it means to ask for help in an individualistic society that values autonomy. At times it seems asking for help is perceived as weakness or defect. Instead, what if we saw asking for help as a sign of strength? Strong enough to be vulnerable…brave enough to be honest…courageous enough to not be okay.
