Through their eyes.

June 27, 2020. Aware of the mosquito situation left behind by recent storms, today we opted to hike the sunny, breezy prairie of Governor Nelson State Park. As we meandered along the paths leading us through tall grasses and wild flowers, we stopped frequently to learn about incredible observations Elijah and Penelope were making.

Penelope noticed how some plant stems had bulges in them. We took time to wonder about why the bulges were on some stems and not others. Knowing little about this type of plant, we were unable to draw a definitive conclusion but gathered lots of information and formulated wonderful hypotheses. Elijah spent time observing the differences and similarities between various flowers. He explored them with his sense of smell, touch, and sight. Neither he, nor his sister, were asked to make these observations. They just did! It is who they are. Elijah and Penelope are filled with such curiosity. The beautiful ways they wonder come alive through the mindful ways they engage the provocation that is nature.

The lens through which they view the world is invaluable. It broadens my perspective and helps me experience the world in ways I am far too often oblivious to. Near the end of our walk, Nick held my hand as we took the lead. A few minutes later, Elijah said, “Mama, can I have your phone? I’ve GOT to get a picture of this. It’s just too cute!” Then, he and his sister stayed behind us and took a picture while Nick and I continued walking hand in hand.

Their perspective is invaluable. It affirms the beauty around us and in us. It teaches, heals, and grows us. I am blessed EVERY time I try to understand the world through their eyes.
