Calm before the storm…

August 9, 2020. Today we tried to sneak a quick hike in at Festge before the storms arrived. We studied the radar before getting to the park. We kept a close eye on the sky once there. It was quite the adventure racing around the trail, trying to make it back before the severe storm hit. At one point, we found ourselves standing deep in the woods, in absolute awe of how dark and still it was. We had never heard the forest so quiet. There were no birds to be found. No insects to be heard. No wind in the trees. It was completely still. It was both eerie and peaceful. I’ve heard the expression “calm before the storm” before, this may be the first time I’ve ever experienced it quite this profoundly.
