June 14, 2020. In our family, we love to be adventurers. We try to approach life with open minds and courageous souls. We lived into this on another beautiful day at Indian Lake. On our three mile trek, we explored the wide open prairie, enjoyed birds, found beautiful insects and, on a whim, decided toContinue reading “A Sticky Situation.”

Connections & Wildflower.
June 13, 2020. On this hike, we explored a new (to us) segment of the ice age trail. As we did, the kids continued to make “text to world connections” as they imagined and talked about how the various parts of the trail reminded them of different places the Ingalls family lived in Laura IngallsContinue reading “Connections & Wildflower.”
Meditative Walking
June 12, 2020. On this hike, we explored Governor Nelson State Park for the first time. We also began a new “tradition” on our hikes. At some point along the trail, we quiet our voices for 2-5 minutes while walking and we each pay attention to what the ground feels like below us, what weContinue reading “Meditative Walking”
Ride of a lifetime.
June 7, 2020. Elijah and Penelope are so gifted at noticing the little things. In the times I become hyper-focused on moving us from point A to point B, I am humbled and in awe of Elijah and Penelope’s ability to take in, observe, and interact with all the beauty along the way. Kids areContinue reading “Ride of a lifetime.”
The Webs.
June 4, 2020. It was a beautiful sunny day and we were headed back to the ice age trail! Not long into the hike, we encountered a challenge. Spiders were busy at work weaving webs across the path. We worked hard to keep our positive attitudes despite the constant feeling of spider webs (and atContinue reading “The Webs.”
Resiliency.
May 30, 2020. Despite being our shortest hike, it was one filled with bravery and resiliency. After a difficult 8 hours in the Emergency Room on Memorial Day, Penelope was fitted with a cast for her newly broken arm. The doctor placed relief cuts in the cast due to the extensive swelling and follow upContinue reading “Resiliency.”
The difference two months makes…
May 24, 2020. It’s amazing the difference two month makes. By this hike, the earth had come alive again and, in some ways, so had we. We greatly enjoyed running, jumping, and exploring the gem that is Indian Lake for the first time.
Beauty and hope blossom in the stillness of despair.
March 25, 2020. For our second adventure, we headed to Festge County Park. Having never been, we didn’t know quite what to expect. We reviewed our map and hit the trails running (well, again, the kids were running and the adults tried to keep up). We celebrated any signs of new life we could find,Continue reading “Beauty and hope blossom in the stillness of despair.”
When it all began…
The first hike. March 22, 2020. Not long into the COVID-19 shut down, the KNEP family (Kimby, Nick, Elijah, and Penelope) took to the trails. In the midst of uncertainty, overwhelm, grief/loss, and the host of things that come with a global pandemic, we hoped a hike would give us some perspective and hope. WeContinue reading “When it all began…”
